Welcome New Students!
Welcome to Toryukai Karate-Do. If you are considering visiting our dojo, either as a new student of Karate or an existing student of another dojo there is some information you may like to know first.
At Toryukai we believe in providing a safe, non-threatening environment for all new students. We take great care to ensure that beginner students are made to feel welcome and are given the best possible introduction to Karate and Karate-Do.
For all new students, the first lesson is free of charge!
New Students
It is best to contact us and check the calendar before visiting. This is both to ensure that the dojo will have practice when you will visit, and to let us know you are coming. We sometimes have special practices or holidays when either new students cannot be accomodated, or when there will be no practice. Please do not disturb a class that is already in progress. Ask for Sensei Jason or any black-belt you can ask questions of before or after class. Questions will not usually be answered during a class unless a regular student is sitting out and observing class that day.
Liability Waiver
In addition, all new students must sign a liability waiver form before commencing training. The form can be downloaded here. Please bring this form with you when you visit the dojo.

What to Wear
Normal workout clothing is fine (long pants preferred). Anything that you would wear to a yoga class or similar is fine.
Important:
What should I expect?
Toryukai is a traditional Shotokan Karate training style which follows exactly the original training done in Japan and so takes a lot of the history and tradition from this martial art.
Karate training is designed primarily to improve physical fitness, self confidence, strength of character and discipline. It does this by combining the "martial" aspects (combat, self defense etc) with the "arts" aspects (history, tradition, ceremony etc) to help practitioners bring balance to their every day life.
Training is usually somewhat physically demanding, however great care is taken to ensure everyone is able to participate within their own limits.
Even if you do not want to train, you are welcome to come and observe.
Dojo Etiquette
Please review the Dojo Etiquette prior to attending training as it will give you important information about how classes are conducted.
